Tap water in the USA is one of the highest quality in the world. Most tap water quality provided by local municipalities in the United States is of high international standard and healthy and safe to drink.
However, the drinking water standards can vary by state - it’s worth remembering that impurities can enter your water supply even from individual pipes coming to your home.
What’s in your tap water?
Chlorine and various minerals are a staple ingredient of any tap water - chlorine is used to treat harmful bacteria from the water before it reaches your tap.
The levels of chlorine are regularly monitored as required by law, so the chances of consuming harmful amounts of chlorine are extremely small.
Limescale is a chalky substance made of magnesium and calcium carbonate. It is formed when hard water [i.e. water with high mineral content] is boiled.
You can often see a limescale build-up in electric kettles and taps. It can affect the efficiency of electric kettles, so it’s worth cleaning them regularly.
Clean your kettle with vinegar
My tip: clean your kettle with vinegar. Get a bottle of cheap vinegar, pour it into your kettle just enough so it covers the area affected by the limescale and boil it twice. Make sure to open the windows, as the smell is eye-watering!
Leave the vinegar for another 30 minutes so it dissolves the limescale completely. Then simply pour it out, rinse the kettle a few times to get rid of any vinegar smell and enjoy limescale free coffee!
Most water supplies contain fluoride - either naturally, or added artificially - while it’s a standard feature in tap water, it has its advocates and critics.
Fluoride reduces tooth decay, however some state that high levels of this chemical formula can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis - damage to your teeth and bones.
